Putting Hell In Its Place- Protecting the Spirit Flow through Purity
You can’t fake the power of the Holy Spirit. Just claiming to be part of his Kingdom doesn’t automatically make his power at your disposal. His power is at your disposal when He rules your heart.
In Acts 19 we see these two poles compared in a real life situation. Paul has the ability to cast out demons because he is operating in the power of the Spirit. On the other hand there are some Jews who were trying to claim the Spirit’s authority without having the Spirit- and the demon cleans their clock! The news spread throughout the region. The lesson they learned gives us some insights into what is behind the power of the Spirit when dealing with Spiritual warfare- purity. Those who heard the story and turned to Christ turned away from their sinful practices. They even burned millions of dollars worth of demonic incantation books.
The Holy Spirit demands purity- that we allow him to get rid of the sinful practices in our lives. One of the fruit of the flesh is impurity. The presence of the Holy Spirit helps us overcome our thirst for impurity. Jesus warned us that those who are impure would have nothing to do with the Kingdom. We can’t fake the Spirit, or manufacture his fruit. He is either in control, or he isn’t. When he is in control, there is a desire to keep in step with his heart- purity. When his fruit is coming out of us, we have power to overcome spiritual fights.
So, we must stay close to the Spirit, being careful to avoid those things we know to be sin. We don’t do this to protect some rulebook, but to protect the Spirit’s dominion over us. We must stay pure if God is going to use us in Spiritual warfare.
