Putting Hell In It’s Place 1- The power of the WORD.
Fighting Satan is one of the more confusing and terrifying subjects for most believers. And yet, this fundamental issue was so critical that Jesus’ ministry couldn’t begin before he faced Satan’s fundamental temptations head on. If we intend to be people of spiritual power, we must look at Jesus’ spiritual fight against Satan and embrace his strategy.
Jesus knew Satan was powerless against God’s word and he chose to use it as his primary weapon to combat Satan’s attacks. Jesus had studied the word from a very young age (as evidenced by his test before the authorities in the temple as a boy…remember when Mary and Joseph lost Jesus and found him in the temple? He was passing his Bar mitzvah.). It was in his head and the Holy Spirit was using it now during these temptations.
But the power of the Scripture was multiplied by the Spiritual disciplines Jesus was now employing. He was praying and fasting. And it wasn’t just a momentary thing…it was a serious discipline in Jesus’ life. We know that because he is seen in times of devoted prayer and fasting throughout his ministry…not just this one time. The combination of prayer and fasting in the life of someone whose mind is saturated with God’s Word is powerful. These three components become the foundation of any effective spiritual fight. And that is why Satan fights us so hard to keep us from forming any consistent discipline in any of the three.
However, when people who are consistently in God’s word begin praying and fasting for extended periods of time, they are ready to fight. And the fight will come through serious fundamental temptations. But you will overcome them because you have armed yourself well and are fighting in the power of the Spirit.
