A Generous Life Sermon 1- God is Good
This sermon series introduces the idea of true generosity. We live in a world that is committed to reciprocity (“You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”). We know what is fair and we are committed to getting the best end of the stick. But, Jesus thinks differently than we do. He gives because he is generous, not because we deserve it. His love isn’t measured out to the degree to which we love him back. He lavishes love with abundant grace. God is calling us to embrace his holiness- his character. And in the New Testament Jesus reminds us that god is GOOD- a term that refers to the generous heart of God who gives abundantly more than we could ever ask or imagine. He lavishes love. He forgives freely. He never quits, never abandons. He gives a good measure, pressed down and shaken together. It seems very odd to us. We live in a “back-scratchers” world committed to fairness. So when we hear Jesus say things like “Turn the other cheek”, or “walk the extra mile”, our fairness scale kicks into gear and we know this isn’t a good deal. But, Jesus is calling us to embrace the Father’s heart and walk away from our backscratcher mentality. He is calling us to offer mercy and patience where it isn’t deserved. he calls us to keep serving when others demand their rights be honored. He calls us to pick up our crosses and follow him into a world where we choose to serve one another out of reverence for Christ’s sacrificial death. Today we look into the character of God, who offers forgiveness according to his generosity, not our worthiness. ***Copies of A
